Cairns Child Protection Investigation Unit detectives have charged a 25-year-old Port Douglas man with multiple offences following an incident in Cairns on Friday, March 21.
It is alleged the man had arranged to meet a teenage girl at a Cairns City hotel via social media.
A family member of the girl reported the meeting to police when she became aware of it.
An extensive investigation was launched to locate the man and girl, before they were both found by officers from the Far North District Tactical Crime Squad later that evening.
It is further alleged the man supplied the girl with cannabis prior to sexually assaulting her.
The man was charged with three counts each of rape and supply dangerous drugs, and one count each of using the internet to procure a child under 16, possess dangerous drugs, possess utensils and breach of bail.
He appeared in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Saturday March 22, where he was remanded in custody until June 10.
Officer in charge of the Cairns Child Protection and Investigation Unit Detective Senior Sergeant Mick Gooiker said police are continuing to provide support to the victim.
“This alleged victim has shown immense bravery in coming forward and speaking to us in relation to this matter,” Detective Senior Sergeant Mick Gooiker said.
“The fact that this man was quickly located and arrested by police demonstrates the dedication of police in responding to child harm in the community.
“We will continue to investigate all reports of offences against children and bring alleged offenders before the court.”
