An 18-month-old girl has been hit and killed by a vehicle in Adelaide’s inner south this morning, with police now investigating the circumstances of the crash.

Emergency services attended Rentoul Avenue in Netherby after reports a child had been struck by a vehicle about 8am this morning. 

SA Police said the girl was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. 

“The child, an 18-month old girl, was treated by paramedics at the scene but sadly died in hospital,” police said.

While police have not confirmed exactly where the incident occurred, nor what type of vehicle was involved, Major Crash investigators have attended the scene and are examining the circumstances.

Neighbour Michael Angelakis said his heart went out to the girl’s family, and he described the incident as “tragic”.

“To have something like this in your backyard just absolutely shocks you to the core,” he said.

“It’s the worst thing.

“I couldn’t imagine as a parent and as a grandparent – I couldn’t imagine it, a total tragedy.”

SA Police said the driver of the vehicle was assisting the investigation and had been taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

Rentoul Avenue was closed but has since reopened.

The death is the 59th on South Australia’s roads in 2024.
