A major timber mill in regional South Australia has been shut as authorities investigate the death of a worker at the site.

Safework SA and SA Police are investigating the death of a man at the Timberlink Australia mill at Tarpeena, in the state’s south-east, early on Wednesday morning.

Emergency services were called to the mill just after 1:30am.

The circumstances of the incident are not yet known.

A Safework SA spokesperson said an investigator and inspector have attended the mill and are making enquiries around the circumstances of the incident.

Safework SA declined to comment further.

A $90 million expansion to the Tarpeena mill was opened earlier this year and the site is one of the largest mills in the south-east.

A Timberlink spokesperson said the mill is shut while investigations continue and the company is cooperating with authorities.

“Timberlink takes the safety of its employees and contractors seriously,” the spokesperson said.

“We are and will continue to provide ongoing support to our team members.

“We wish to extend our condolences to the worker’s family, friends, and co-workers at such a difficult time, and express our deepest sympathy to everyone affected.”

The spokesperson said the company hoped to provide an update in the future.
