A driver has been taken to hospital after a ute crashed into a power pole and flipped onto its roof along a major Adelaide road, disrupting peak-hour traffic and electricity supply.

The crash on Glen Osmond Road has cut power to almost 1,800 properties in suburbs including Eastwood, Parkside and Unley.

The arterial road is strewn with debris and has been closed to traffic in both directions between Greenhill and Fullarton roads.

The SA Ambulance Service said a man in his 50s had been taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a serious condition.

“The driver has been safely removed and taken to hospital,” SA Police Senior Constable Kimberley Broad told ABC Radio Adelaide.

“A car hit a Stobie pole and has subsequently knocked out power in the area.”

Emergency services were called about 6am, and remain on scene along with electricity authorities.

Police have urged drivers to find alternative routes.

“Traffic is already banking up and motorists should avoid Glen Osmond [Road] if possible,” police said.
