Police say a couple died in a three-car crash near Penola in South Australia’s south-east on Easter Sunday.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of the Riddoch Highway and Three Mile Lane, just south of Penola, about 5:15pm yesterday.

A 62-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman from the Mount Gambier suburb of Suttontown died at the scene.

Two Victorian women, aged 42 and 69, were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and a 51-year-old Penola man suffered minor injuries.

The Riddoch Highway was closed for hours while major crash investigators examined the scene but is reopened today.

The deaths are the 22nd and 23rd lives lost on South Australian roads this year.

An 18-year-old Penola man died in a motorcycle crash just north of the town on February 2.
