It’s been billed as Australia’s answer to the Golden Globes — even the Oscars depending on who you ask — and the awards ceremony is being held today.

The AACTAs are the country’s peak celebration of homegrown film and television talent.

Short for the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, dozens of awards are up for grabs with the aim of “shining a spotlight on Australia’s exceptional productions”.

Who is hosting the AACTA Awards?

She is due to be joined at the Gold Coast awards ceremony with the likes of Cate Blanchett, Ron Howard, Tom GleesonDeborah Mailman, Rove McManus, Julia Zemiro and Teresa Palmer.

Hang on, why are the awards on the Gold Coast?

It’s been a few years since Queensland poached the Logies from Victoria.

Now, the AACTA Awards will be held on the Goldy.

AACTA president Russell Crowe has announced the region will also be home to the awards for three years from this year.

He says he’s had “the benefit of a very long association with the Gold Coast” dating back to the first film he worked on in the city in the late 1980s.

In deciding where to host the evening, he says he encouraged the organisation’s chief executive to “reach out to Queensland to see what they had to say”.

Crowe, who won’t be at the awards evening, says they will be held at the city’s purpose-built Home of The Arts (HOTA).

“HOTA, as one little example, is one of the most brilliant things I’ve ever seen to build specifically a home of the arts,” he says.

What is Margot Robbie nominated for?

The Barbie star is not nominated in any of the standard categories.

Instead, Robbie is returning to her old home town to accept the AACTA Trailblazer Award.

AACTA says it’s a “discretionary award”.

Basically, that means it’s a special award that’s not just handed out willy-nilly.

Previous recipients include Chris Hemsworth, Rose Byrne, Simon Baker and Isla Fisher

“This opportunity to present that award to her on her home soil, the Gold Coast, we’re so excited,” AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella said

“I don’t think many people from Australia have achieved anything quite like that.

“Not just to lead in the biggest global film of the year but to have produced it and had such a hand in the design of that film.”

How can I watch the AACTA Awards?

The awards show will be broadcast today on Channel Ten at 7pm.

A “director’s cut” of the show will air Sunday on BINGE and Foxtel On-Demand and on AACTA TV.

Traditionally held towards the end of each year, the new date for the awards ceremony is designed to bring it into line with the international awards schedule.

AACTA, formerly the AFI Awards, has honoured screen excellence in Australia since first being held in 1958.

Can you see the stars in person?

That is going to be tough, according to Mr Trewhella.

He says Saturday’s red carpet will be a closed event.

However, there is a festival “wrapped around” the awards ceremony over the weekend, he adds.

Who is nominated in the 2024 AACTAs?

It’s a long list.

You can see all the productions and everyone who is nominated for an award here

Mr Trewhella isn’t giving away any clues about the winners.

“There’s been so many great productions over the past 12 months; I wouldn’t like to say what happens over the next few days.”

The ABC’s The Newsreader has 15 nominations, followed by The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart with 12.

The Newsreader’s Anna Torv and Sam Reid have both received lead acting nods, along with Sigourney Weaver, who is in the running for best lead actress in a drama.

Comedy series Colin From Accounts and crime drama Deadloch have both secured 10 nominations.

The AACTA Industry Awards were held on Thursday, and there are a bunch of Australians included in the AACTA Audience Choice Awards, including Margot Robbie, Chris Hemsworth and Jacob Elordi.
