Charlie Stevens, the 18-year-old son of South Australia’s Police Commissioner Grant Stevens, has an “irreversible brain injury” after a crash south of Adelaide last night.

Deputy Commissioner Linda Williams said in a press conference in Adelaide on Saturday morning that Charlie was on life support and his family was by his bedside in hospital.

He was hit by a car at Goolwa Beach, where thousands of young people have converged for the Schoolies Festival.

The vehicle didn’t stop at the scene but an 18-year-old man was later arrested nearby.

“I offer my condolences to Grant and Emma and the family, as well as the wider community, including Charlie’s friends and his work mates,” Deputy Commissioner Williams said.

“As you can appreciate, both the events of yesterday have had a very profound effect on South Australia Police and on the wider South Australian community.

“I just want to recognise the efforts of our staff yesterday and throughout last night and today because they have been courageous, each and every one of them.”

South Australia’s Premier Peter Malinauskas said his and the rest of the state’s thoughts were with Mr Stevens’s family.

“The entirety of the state, our thoughts are with Commissioner Stevens and his beautiful wife Emma and all of their children,” Mr Malinauskas said.

“To each and every member of the entire SAPOL community, the state stands with you at this difficult time. We thank you so much for everything that you do for each and every one of us.”
