A man has been arrested over an alleged hit-and-run at Goolwa Beach on South Australia’s south coast amid schoolies celebrations.

SA Police said emergency services were called to Beach Road about 9pm on Friday to reports a pedestrian was struck by a car.

The Colonel Light Gardens man, 18, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to the Flinders Medical Centre for treatment.

Officers said the driver of the car, an Encounter Bay man, 18, was pulled over by police on Port Elliot Road at Goolwa.

He was charged with causing harm by dangerous driving, aggravated driving without due care, leaving the scene of a crash and failing to truly answer questions.

The man has been refused police bail and will appear in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court on Monday.

Beach Road was closed while Major Crash investigators examined the scene.

The vehicle in question has been towed from the scene for forensic investigation, SA Police said.

The incident happened during the Schoolies Festival after celebrations got underway on Friday.

A witness said he was near the scene of the incident when he heard a scream and a loud shatter.

“I came for a drive up the road and there was a bunch of lights,” he said.

Police Minister Joe Szakacs said school leavers needed to take care of each other while celebrating.

“It’s a reminder about the importance of everybody on our roads taking that extra caution, keep an eye out for others,” Mr Szakacs said.

“It’s everyone’s responsibility to ensure everyone gets home safe on our roads.”
