A Port Lincoln paedophile has been sentenced to more than six-and-a-half years’ jail for possessing child exploitation material and indecently filming children at several locations around the regional town between 2019 and 2022.
Key points:
- Reece George indecently filmed children at the Port Lincoln Kmart store and at a local restaurant
- He has been sentenced to six-and-a-half years jail
- But he will be able to apply for release on parole in January 2026
Reece George, 40, indecently filmed children on several occasions at the local Kmart store in Edinburgh Street.
During sentencing in the District Court, Judge Emily Telfer said the presence of parents did not appear to deter George from offending.
The court heard on one occasion George indecently filmed a child and an adult at the Kmart store toilet.
On another occasion in 2021, a father who was shopping with his two daughters at Kmart confronted George after he observed him filming them.
“CCTV footage showed that you positioned yourself in the children’s clothing section of the store. As a child bent down to look at something on the shop shelves, you crouched down apparently filming her buttock area,” Judge Telfer said.
After that incident the court heard George was served with a paedophile restraining order where he was not allowed to loiter near children but he was seen back at Kmart again in January 2022 committing the same offences.
“You were seen by witnesses laying underneath the shelf in order to film up the skirts of young children who were in the adjoining aisle,” Judge Telfer said.
The court heard George had also filmed a young girl at a local pizza restaurant while she was seated.
The court heard police had found child exploitation material on George’s phone in 2019 and 2021.
Judge Telfer acknowledged medical reports that had deemed George “psychologically inadequate” and was unable to form relationships or connections with others.
“Against the background of chronic loneliness you turned to the internet to satisfy your emotional and sexual needs,” Judge Telfer said.
“You developed an internet pornography addiction and moved from there to paedophilic voyeurism.”
Judge Telfer ordered George serve a non-parole period of four years, which when backdated to when he was first imprisoned could make him eligible for release in January 2026.
