A truck driver has pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving over a crash that killed a pedestrian in Adelaide’s south earlier this year.
Key points:
- Jagmeet Singh was driving the truck that hit the pedestrian
- The 64-year-old man died at the scene
- Singh today pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving
Police alleged Jagmeet Singh was driving a heavy vehicle at Melrose Park in a “negligent” manner before it struck and killed the 64-year-old man.
The crash happened on South Road at Melrose Park on the night of Sunday, February 5.
Emergency services were called to the site of the crash about 9pm after reports that a pedestrian had been hit.
The victim died at the scene and Singh was arrested the following day.
The 31-year-old driver today appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court.
He pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, with his previous charge of driving without due care revoked.
Chief Magistrate Mary-Louise Hribal described Singh’s driving as “reckless, or at speed or in a manner that was dangerous”.
The victim’s family attended court.
Death by dangerous driving carries a maximum life sentence and 15-year disqualification from driving.
Singh will face court again in November, when he will be sentenced in the District Court.
The fatal crash happened on the same weekend as two other people were killed on South Australia’s roads.
