A driver has died in a crash with a Stobie pole in Adelaide’s north, taking the number of lives lost on the state’s roads this year above what it was for the whole of last year.
Key points:
- A 69-year-old Ingle Farm man died when the car he was driving hit a Stobie pole
- The crash happened at Northfield on Thursday morning
- The number of people killed on SA roads this year is 72, compared to 71 for all of 2022
Emergency services were called to Briens Road at Northfield about 4:30am on Thursday after a silver Ford Focus, which had been travelling north, left the road and hit the pole.
The driver and sole occupant of the car, a 69-year-old Ingle Farm man, died at the scene.
SA Police’s Major Crash unit is investigating the circumstances.
Meanwhile, a pedestrian has been hit in Adelaide’s CBD near the corner of Pulteney and Angas streets.
The elderly woman was struck just before 3pm today, and has been taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Serious crashes on SA roads reach 500
The Northfield crash has taken the number of people killed on South Australia’s roads this year to 72, compared to 71 for all of 2022.
The RAA said it was the earliest the state had reached that number of lives lost since 2010.
The organisation said there had been about 505 serious crashes in South Australia so far this year, with about the same number of people suffering injuries.
Its senior manager of safety and infrastructure, Charles Mountain, urged drivers to avoid distractions, be patient, slow down and drive to the conditions.
“We want drivers to increase their awareness on the road to reflect different driving conditions and to continually monitor road users nearby,” he said.
