A pilot has been taken to hospital after a light aircraft crash near the border of South Australia and New South Wales.

The plane crashed just after 5pm in a remote area near Mulyungarie, about 110 kilometres north-west of Broken Hill, in South Australia.

South Australian police say only one person was on board and that person walked free of the wreckage at the crash site.

The person has been flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
