Man charged after shooting of wife and daughter in Adelaide’s north-east

A man has been charged with murder after a shooting in Adelaide’s north-eastern suburbs that left his wife dead and his daughter seriously injured, and triggered an hours-long stand-off with police.

SA Police were called to Elm Road at Campbelltown about 1:20pm on Saturday after reports that gun shots were heard and two women were seen collapsed on the driveway of a home.

When patrols arrived, they found 51-year-old Aleksandra Vergulis dead at the scene and her daughter, 22-year-old Daniela Vergulis, with serious injuries.

The injured woman was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

Hill Street, Victor Road, Elm Road and surrounding streets were blocked off as STAR Group officers responded to reports that an armed man remained inside.

Paramedics and firefighters remained on stand-by.

Police evacuated nearby residents and asked others to remain inside while they undertook “lengthy negotiations” with the man.

Vasili Vergulis, 51, surrendered to police and was arrested at 5:10pm.

He has been charged with murder and attempted murder.

He did not apply for bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Detectives visited the house and continued to gather evidence on Sunday.

One man who lives on a nearby street said he was finding the alleged shooting “difficult to understand”.

“It’s very uncommon, this kind of incident, especially in Campbelltown, or even in Adelaide,” he said.

A neighbour, who has lived in the area for 50 years, found out what had happened from police, who told him to stay inside.

“It’s terrible, terrible,” he said.

Another person who lives on a nearby street said she came home to find a “massive police presence”.

“So I knew something terrible had happened,” she said.

She said the area was “usually pretty quiet” and described the situation as “shocking”.
