An Adelaide truck driver who was involved in a crash that injured two school students has appeared in court for the first time on two counts of dangerous driving.

Key points:

  • Two teenagers were injured in a collision near their school
  • Truck driver Sang Van Hunyh has been charged with dangerous driving
  • The matter will return to court in October

Sang Van Hunyh, 60, was driving through a pedestrian crossing on Kensington Road near Marryatville High School in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs when he allegedly hit two students in March this year.

A boy and a girl, both 16, were injured and a third student reported to be narrowly missed by the collision.

The Education Department has told the ABC it will not provide an update on the condition of the students.

Police have previously said they are investigating if Mr Hunyh drove through a red light.

On Wednesday, Mr Hunyh’s lawyer asked the court for a five-month adjournment until October this year and for an interpreter in the next proceedings.

Outside the court, lawyer Son Nguyen said his client is “stressed enough as it is” and is seeking more time as police continue their investigations into the crash.

“At the moment it’s very early in the stages and there’s really not much we can say,” Mr Nguyen said.

“I would rather not say anything until the matter is resolved.”

‘Extremely traumatic incident’

At the time of the crash, police said the “extremely traumatic” incident was witnessed widely by other students who were left distressed and upset.

“There were other children at the crossing as I understand at the time, and other vehicles stopped,” Superintendent Narelle Kameniar said.

“It is a tragedy to everybody who witnessed this, this morning, and my heart goes out to the families of these children and the school.

“It’s obviously very distressing for them, and my heart goes out to the school community as well.”

Marryatville High School principal John Tiver alerted parents of the incident that morning.

“Before school this morning, three students from Marryatville High School were involved in a motor vehicle incident on Kensington Road at a crossing point with traffic lights in place,” Mr Tiver said.

The truck driver will return to the Adelaide Magistrates Court in October.
