Australians are being urged to upload a picture of their favourite public toilet for this year’s Great Dunny Hunt.

Key points:

  • Votes are open for Australia’s best public toilet facilities
  • Supported by the Continence Foundation of Australia, the competition and accompanying map helps people struggling with incontinence have confidence to travel
  • Cleanliness, accessibility and well-maintained facilities rate best

The Continence Foundation of Australia is again mapping the country’s best facilities in a bid to make people living with incontinence feel more comfortable about venturing out.

“It’s so important, because when you need to go you need to go, so it’s really important to know, especially if you’re doing a long trip,” Continence Foundation of Australia programs and projects manager Daniyela Rob said.

“To know where the toilets are so you can go there and feel comfortable and not have anxiety.

“It is really important for everyone to be able to enjoy a really good quality life and be able to go out into their community.”

Features of a good toilet include accessibility for people with a disability, facilities that are well maintained, and access to an adult changing table.

“People living with a physical disability that need the assistance of other people, that have mobility issues, they need things like a sling in the toilet and hoist as well as a table,” Ms Rob said.

“We’ve heard of people being changed on the floor of a toilet because there’s no table there for them, it isn’t right.”

This year the public is being encouraged to upload a picture of their vote to go in the running to win a $500 voucher.

“People need to upload the photos because there’s 21,000 toilets on the map but only 3,000 have photos, so we’re trying to get more,” Ms Rob said.

Anyone who wants to vote for their favourite public toilet can head to the foundation’s website or can download the national public toilet map app.

The judging panel

The best public toilet facilities will be judged by an expert panel including Sean Burford, who won the title of Australia’s Best Dunny Hunter in 2022.

“Last year Sean made it his mission to get as many dunnies as he could on the map and he put over 120 toilets on the map,” Ms Rob said.

Mr Burford said the best part of the Great Dunny Hunt was discovering new locations in rural and regional Australia.

One in four Australians over the age of 15 are incontinent, which is more than five million Australians.

Votes for Australia’s Great Dunny Hunt open on April 3 and close on June 19.
