By Simon Smale
16th over – Brathwaite in again
By Andrew McGarry
A couple of singles to start, but Brathwaite sends down a lovely drifting ball across Labuschagne on the fourth ball. No edge.
Marnus gets two off the next one, and then a dot to finish the over.
Success for Roston Chase
By Andrew McGarry
Chase to bowl to Steve Smith
By Andrew McGarry
Smith comes out and eases off the mark with a single off his first ball. No pair for the stand-in skipper.
Labuschagne adds another single, and then Smith pushes forward to block the last ball of the over.
Great effort there from Chase – can his teammates chip in as well?
Now Roston Chase gets Usman Khawaja!
By Andrew McGarry
Key Event
So you’re the West Indies and you finally get a wicket – and the next man comes out having scored 471 runs in three innings in the series. Yikes.
What will Labuschagne do? Will Khawaja take the lead for a while?
An easy single down the ground to get off the mark.
AND THERE’S ANOTHER! A great ball there from Chase – and he draws the edge from Khawaja – big deflection, great catch from Joshua da Silva! Australia are 2-78.
15th over – Roston Chase is on – and he gets David Warner!!
By Andrew McGarry
Key Event
Not sure what the plan is here – if the Aussies hit the cover off the ball it won’t matter that much that the lights come on later.
They’re going with spin from both ends, with Chase coming into the attack.
AND HE BOWLS HIM!
Warner does it again! He stood there with no footwork, tried to whoosh at it outside off and dragged it on. Poor shot , that.
14th over – The captain comes on
By Andrew McGarry
Kraigg Brathwaite brings himself on – which in itself is a sign of where things are at.
There is no hurry from the tourists.
Brathwaite bowls to Warner, who switch hits and it deflects to slip, but they go up. It hasn’t hit the glove. No run, no wicket.
Warner gets a single off the next ball. And now Khawaja runs the ball down to third man for three.
It’s that late afternoon in Adelaide, the shadows are creeping across.
An easy single off the last ball from Warner.
0-77 off 14 overs. A breeze for the Aussies here.
13th over – Anderson Phillip to take the ball
By Andrew McGarry
Warner whacks one away behind point for a single to start proceedings. Simple stuff.
Now Khawaja drives away to almost the same spot for another single.
Warner defends the next ball, but he seemed to have plenty of time there.
FOUR! Warner drags a short ball outside off well into the gap to the boundary. The scoring is too easy here.
A single now, brings Usman on strike. He digs in a short ball to finish. No run.
First over of a new session – seven off it. Ouch.
Here we go again
By Andrew McGarry
What is there to say here?
The Aussies are dominant – there was the odd chance, like Usman Khawaja’s edge that fell short of the cordon. But really, they are in charge, the lead is 362, and it could get to 420-plus by tea.
Australia could easily afford to declare before the final session – they won’t, but they could.
Anyway, let’s see what the second hour has in store.
12th over – Thomas to bowl again
By Simon Smale
Warner gets a single first ball.
Khawaja then hooks to square leg for a couple more.
Four! That’s a lovely shot from Khawaja, a square drive back past deep point and he’s beaten the man out there, Blackwood.
Four more! Full toss, hit to exactly the same place as before. That was dross from Thomas, to be honest.
The run rate is just over 5.5 per over at the moment.
Another full toss, at 130kph, Khawaja leans back to cut but misses it.
There’s a dot off the final ball and that’s drinks at the mid point of this session.
Andrew McGarry is next up.
11th over – Anderson Phillip continues
By Simon Smale
Four! Well hooked by Khawaja backward of square.
Fended to backward point, they’ll run two.
Phillip is coming around the wicket and angling the ball into Khawaja, who defends a decent ball back of a length.
A push to point and there’s no run there, the Windies have finally closed off that scoring area perhaps?
Hooked to midwicket but straight to the fielder there, no run.
Oh did that one come back in a bit? Khawaja seemed to be a bit surprised by it but was able to defend into the off side without any undue drama.
10th over – Devon Thomas
By Simon Smale
He was the sixth bowler used in the first innings. He’s on at second change here.
Warner’s eyes widened at the first ball that swung back in.
Warner plays with a horizontal bat to point for a single.
Edged! It bounces just in front of a diving da Silva behind the wicket. It’s a bottom edge from a horizontal bat.
Khawaja plays again with a horizontal bat and takes a single to point.
9th over – Anderson Phillip, all rounder, to come into the attack
By Simon Smale
Warner defends the first.
Warner clips the ball to square leg in the air and it falls safe, just a single.
Khawaja takes the simplest of singles to backward point. Too easy for Australia to score there.
A little clip there down to fine leg for three runs.
Khawaja is a bit surprised at a ball that bounced into him from outside off and he got the bottom hand away.
8th over – Holder continues
By Simon Smale
Four! Lovely shot from Khawaja through cover for a four.
Four! Khawaja tickles off his pads with a cross-blade swipe down to fine leg.
Khawaja played the ball back to Holder, who nonchalantly picked it up and flicked it back towards Khawaja, who held his pose as the ball rolled past him to the keeper, da Silva. Strange little passage of play there.
Round the wicket from Holder for the final ball of the over, he sends it wide outside off.
England takes first innings lead in Pakistan
By Simon Smale
It’s a pitch that has very much been prepared for the hosts, but England have still rolled Pakistan this morning in Multan.
202 all out was the score, 79 runs behind England’s first innings total.
Jack Leach passed 100 Test wickets for England as he took 4-98.
It’s lunch over there, by the way.
7th over – Joseph comes in again
By Simon Smale
A push through to cover point and the man there is deep so Warner hussles for two.
Warner pulls but straight to the man at midwicket, no run.
Joseph pushes the ball across Warner’s face. Good ball, well left by Warner.
“Yeah!” a really solid call from Warner for a single to cover. Confident.
Khawaja lets out a mew of a “no” call to a straight ball that was fended back down the pitch to Joseph. No run.
That’s 148.8kph as Khawaja pushes to cover for a single to end the over.
6th over – Jason Holder comes in again
By Simon Smale
Holder, from over the wicket, sends the ball across the face to get the two slips and a gully into play. Khawaja leaves alone.
Khawaja gets Warner on strike, pushing for an easy single to wide mid off.
Warner takes a single to cover with a little push off the back foot.
Well wide, Khawaja wanted to thrash his bat towards it but opted against it.
Khawaja pushes a straighter ball to point and he’ll take a single.
Isa Guha, Ian Smith and Kerry O’Keefe are giving their opinion on the World Cup quarter finals. Football punditry at the cricket. Pass, thanks.
5th over – Alzarri Joseph will steam in
By Simon Smale
Four! Beautiful shot from Usman Khawaja, guiding the ball past the two slips and away to third man for a boundary. Lovely stuff.
BEATEN! That’s a ripper from Joseph, a perfect response after the boundary that bounced and spat outside off and had Usman leaping back to get his bat out the way.
Khawaja drives backward of square for no run, Brooks at gully does well to field it diving to his right.
Khawaja fends into the off side, no run.
That last ball was 149kph from Joseph, Khawaja forward defending.
Khawaja takes a single out to deep point to end the over.
4th over – Jason Holder comes in again
By Simon Smale
Khawaja defends.
Four! And now Khawaja drives! Lovely shot, a straight drive back down the ground and it’s flown across the grass to the rope. No stopping that, nor chasing it down.
A push to point gets Khawaja an easy single.
Warner fends away from his body – no run – and leaves the last outside off.
3rd over – Joseph will bowl his second
By Simon Smale
Warner is trapped in front! Big appeal! Looked like it might have been going over to be honest. Oh they’ve reviewed it! Not sure about this but Joseph liked it. Could be going over and down leg. It’s closer than I thought though…
Umpires call is the impact, and the umpire said not out. That was a lot closer than I thought, hitting the leg stumpright at the top and not just clipping it either.
Joseph is enjoying this, inswingers to the lefty at over 140kph. A tough test here at the moment.
Four! Too leg side and it’s a simple leg glance for four.
Joseph sends one across the bows at 144kph. Left well alone by Warner, who has been tempted out there in this series.
He lets the last fly across as well. Over.
