Australia has put the West Indian bowler out of their misery by declaring with a mammoth first innings score of 7-511 thanks to 163 for Marnus Labuschagne and 175 for Travis Head.

Australia vs West Indies, second Test

By Simon Smale

Will it be Boland? Will it be Starc?

By Andrew McGarry

Who will open with the new ball?

The lights are coming on at Adelaide Oval … it’s going to be fairly challenging for the batsmen no matter who has the ball, but will it be the fierce pace and swing of Starc or the nagging line and length with some late movement from Boland?

*Heath Ledger Joker voice* And here. We. Go

– LW

Not sure I disagree, LW. This should be a short, sharp mini-session for the men from the Caribbean here.

Australia declares

By Andrew McGarry

Key Event

West Indies will have 40 more overs to face today, including a session under lights.

Can they keep their wickets until tea and make a solid start here?

Or will Australia’s pacemen be able to do more to make some breakthroughs than the tourists did?

Stand-in captain Steve Smith will be happy enough with the platform – 500-plus is not an insubstantial total to defend.

There will be 24 minutes of play before tea.

137th over – Alzarri Joseph back on

By Andrew McGarry

SHOT! Beautiful cover drive from Alex Carey greets Alzarri Joseph – that’s four.

A dot ball follows… and then Carey CRACKS an off-drive for four. That was an even better shot!

Carey has a windy woof at the next ball – maybe this is the final flurry coming up. He leaves the next ball outside off and then hits straight to the field…

And they’re running in! That’s the declaration at 7-511.

136th over – the captain has another over

By Andrew McGarry

Brathwaite again. Starc pushes away from him, no run.

And there’s 500! Starc clips one off leg, it narrowly evades the close fielder.

And now Carey tweaks another single. They’re not exactly going ham here, will we have to wait a bit for a declaration?

Starc gets two off the final ball of the over, so it’s Carey back on strike.

135th over – Anderson Phillip

By Andrew McGarry

Alex Carey gets a single off the first ball – there is no shielding the tail-ender here.

Will Starc go bang, as he is wont to do?

He gets another single, and it’s Carey who has a swing – but no run. Australia are seven away from the 500.

And now they are three away! Carey pulls Phillip away and it runs to the boundary. Glorious shot.

Good grief – there was nearly another mix-up there! Carey hit out to the boundary on the offside, they had two started to go back for three and stopped before another disaster.

Two balls left in the over for Mitchell Starc to face

By Andrew McGarry

Australia’s number nine pushes down the ground for a single, and then Carey adds another to keep the strike.

Another breakthrough for the tourists, but that score is heading for 500.

Michael Neser is out LBW for 18! Australia seven down

By Andrew McGarry

Key Event

It’s umpire’s call, was nearly doing too much, but it’s out!

Neser departs for 18, and the captain makes the breakthrough.

134th over – Kraigg Brathwaite comes on

By Andrew McGarry

The shadows are coming halfway across the ground – now the West Indies skipper brings himself on.

A single there out to the offside to Carey.

Another bit of slingy spin there … No run.

Now there’s a big appeal! Brathwaite hits Neser’s pad, the finger goes up! And an immediate review.

This looks out, and Neser is walking!

133rd over – Anderson Phillip to restart after drinks

By Andrew McGarry

So the West Indies at least had some breakthroughs in that first hour of the second session – just like they did yesterday.

The question is, can they go on and go through Australia, or will the home side re-establish the momentum and push towards 530, 550 before calling it a day?

WHOOSH! That’s a start and a half! Carey smashes Phillip over midwicket for four, nearly six!

A statement of intent from Australia!

A shot of the dressing room window shows the Australians have disappeared from view – is a declaration imminent? No issue runs-wise, but normally you would give them half an hour before the break.

More runs … Neser gets a nice single behind point, six off three balls so far.

There’s yet another mis-field, but no run that time.

Both batsmen looking comfortable – seven off the over.

England 5-180 in Pakistan

By Simon Smale

Meanwhile, on a pitch that looks a lot less roadworthy than Rawalpindi, England are in a bit of trouble against Pakistan in Multan.

It’s all down to young Abrar Ahmed who, on debut, has taken all five wickets.

(AP)

The 24-year-old leg spinner has a few tricks on his sleeve and has shown them too.

Is Bazball faltering? Like I said, the pitch looks a tough one.

Anyway, it’s drinks so time for Andrew McGarry.

132nd over – Chase again

By Simon Smale

Neser has to fend the ball backward of square, did it keep low? It turned a lot to be honest, so that might have been it, Neser clipping it off his gloves.

Turn! Lots of it! From middle to well down leg side, the Aussies run a bye as da Silva can’t hold onto it.

Carey takes a single to midwicket – he’d want to be off strike, the left hander, with the ball turning like that.

Neser has three man around him in catching position, slip, leg slip and bat pad.

Neser defends with a little stride forward.

131st over – Anderson Phillip continues

By Simon Smale

Neser has timed some of these balls very nicely.

He’s not able to time Anderson Phillip so far in this over.

That’s nice though, a cut through point for a single to the boundary rider at deep point.

Carey cuts to point but it’s stopped by the man that’s in that position for the Australia keeper. No run.

Carey defends as Phillip comes wide on the crease to angle the ball in. He’s trying everything but can’t make the difference yet.

130th over – Windies continue to Chase wickets

By Simon Smale

Carey is forward. Twice, defending off the front foot.

Make that three times.

Four times.

Slip and bat pad in place.

Good shape from Chase, real late drift there off a ball bowled at 78kph. He’s giving it every chance.

Good ball to finish too, getting that ball to sweep into the left hander.

129th over – Change in bowler, Anderson Phillip comes in

By Simon Smale

Neser defends the first.

A two for Neser now, and then a single with a flashing cut to point that was well fielded. Neser looks very comfortable out there at the moment.

Carey defends a ball angled into him, then takes a single to mid off.

Timing seems a bit off at the moment from Carey for the quicker bowlers.

Four! Hooked nicely, solid shot to the midwicket boundary.

128th over – Chase continues

By Simon Smale

 Neser takes a single.

Carey defends the first.

Four! Reverse sweep, nicely played, a big stride and he’s comfortably guided that backward of point.

(Getty Images)

Solid defence from Carey sees out the over.

127th over – Alzarri Joseph continues

By Simon Smale

Two slips and a gully.

Solid defence from Carey.

Carey creams a square drive to the point boundary, only a single though.

BANG! Ouch! That’s hit Neser hard, right on the cheek – fortunately on the grill of the helmet and there’s no Ponting-stylt cut a la the 2005 Ashes.

Neser seems to be OK, but then again, so was Nkruma Bonner in Perth for about half an hour.

Solid doink that. They did run a leg bye though.

Carey is solid in defence and then lets the last fly through to the keeper.
