Australia vs West Indies, second Test
By Simon Smale
48th over – It’s spin for the West Indies!
By Andrew McGarry
It’s been an excellent performance so far from Jason Holder, as the batsmen grab a quick drink and change gloves.
The West Indies are bringing Roston Chase on… Will this tempt Labuschagne and Head with 26 minutes to go before tea?
Marnus leans forward to the second ball and hits down towards long off for a single.
Head pushes to long-on but he and Labuschagne agree on no run.
A pushed single down the ground gets Marnus on strike for the final ball of the over.
47th over – Jason Holder comes in to Travis Head
By Andrew McGarry
The shadows are lengthening on a beautiful – if cool – afternoon in Adelaide.
Holder keeps Head silent with a couple of dots, but he then pushes through the covers for a single to get off strike.
Labuschagne needs four for his 50 – he gets one of them there square on the legside.
2-56 so far this session.
Head defends back up the pitch, and then lets one go to end the over.
46th over – Joseph tries again
By Andrew McGarry
Alzarri Joseph in again, but he is not willing to throw in the short one against Labuschagne – not in Adelaide, anyway.
FOUR! Marnus goes back to a shorter one and whacks it out to the boundary. Is it on here?
A dot ball is next. Will Labuschagne open up here?
He gets hit on the pad, they consider but don’t go for the review – height looked to be the issue there.
He blocks the rest of the over. Marnus is on 46, Australia are 3-143.
45th over – Jason Holder in again
By Andrew McGarry
Holder will fancy his chances here with a fresh batsman out there.
He comes in to Head, with two slips in. The number five leans to follow the ball and hits it on the off to the fielder, but that was not great balance.
Edge! The ball was near off, but it bounced before slip and through for a couple of runs.
Two more dots, and then Head leans again for a more assured shot square on the off for a single.
At 3-138, the West Indies would think they have more than a sniff here.
Labuschagne controls a short one out on the leg side for one more single.
Celebration time for West Indies
By Andrew McGarry
44th over – Alzarri Joseph comes back on
By Andrew McGarry
A dot ball to start, then Head pushes out through the covers for two.
One more single off the over, but it’s a settling period here.
Travis Head comes to the crease for Australia!
By Andrew McGarry
Travis Head gets a loud reception from his hometown crowd.
This is going to be interesting here, Australia would not want to lose another here.
Holder in to continue the 43rd over. Will Labuschagne spark up, or is Head going to be the aggressor?
he’s immediately off the mark on the offside.
A big “NO RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!” from Labuschagne to end the over. Interesting times!
Steve Smith gone for a duck!!! West Indies strike again
By Andrew McGarry
Key Event
WELL! Jason Holder gets reward for his bowling … he sends one down and Smith just blocks it back for a return catch.
Australia are three-for! That sets the cat amongst the pigeons!
43rd over – Holder continues
By Andrew McGarry
What was that! Labuschagne tried to hit Holder on the leg-side, he skied it but it carried clear of the fielder for a single.
Solid defence from Smith. The rumble of the crowd noise is lifting, as the end of workday fans come in to Adelaide Oval.
Smith is getting them to shift the sightscreen.
Your thoughts
By Andrew McGarry
Captain Smudge to the rescue!
– Mike
It’s not exactly Smith to the rescue … they’re only two-for!
Thomas continues the 42nd over
By Andrew McGarry
I think they took drinks there, but Thomas now continues.
There are a couple of dot balls to Steve Smith to start.
That was a good wicket ball, it looked like the angle was down leg, but it would have hit just enough.
Smith is watchful early. he leans into a shot on the offside, but it goes straight to the fielder at cover.
That’s a wide! Thomas dropped that in too short, it struggled through to the keeper.
Another dot – that’s a good over from Thomas.
Usman Khawaja is out for 62!
By Andrew McGarry
Key Event
… But it clips the stump and it’s umpire’s call!
Usman Khawaja is out again in the 60s!
That wasn’t what you would see coming, but Thomas makes the breakthrough, and Steve Smith is walking to the crease.
A good ball, Khawaja thought it was missing, but he leaves frustrated. Can the West Indies turn one into two and put the Aussies under pressure?
42nd over – Thomas goes again
By Andrew McGarry
This should be the last over before drinks.
Well!! Thomas hits the pad, he appeals and it’s given!!!
Immediate review.
It misses the bat, now for ball tracking.
Pitching outside …
41st over – Jason Holder continues
By Andrew McGarry
FOUR!! A good start from Labuschagne, who clips one behind him down leg to the boundary.
A couple of dots follow.
Australia going at almost exactly three an over, not breaking any records, but Labuschagne and Khawaja closing in on a century partnership.
That’s a shot!! Labuschagne does a beautiful straight drive, it races away off the full face of the bat. Holder will be frustrated here.
A dot ball is next, and Holder finishes with the same result.
40th over – Thomas continues
By Andrew McGarry
This is a better start from Thomas, with a couple of dot balls. Labuschagne looks keen to keep the strike moving, but he lets the third ball (swinging well wide) go.
The shadows are beginning to creep across the ground. Marnus takes an easy single.
Thomas sprays the next one well wide of off. No run.
A slower ball to end the over, Khawaja pushes out to the fielder.
Better over there from Thomas, West Indies will hope he can keep things going for a few overs to give the quicks a bit of rest.
39th over – Jason Holder comes back on
By Andrew McGarry
It’s 1-119 after 38 overs, and Brathwaite brings jason Holder back.
A dot ball to start – can Holder keep his rate? This is his 10th over and he’s conceded 11 so far.
Labuschagne is watchful. Dot.
now he tries to clip Holder from outside off to the legside, gets a single.
If things stay as they are, you still wonder if there is a wicket coming. Bit of a mix-up there with the calling, Khawaja took off and was sent back. Marnus was safe at the non-striker’s end.
Another dot.
0-12 off 10 is a pretty decent return, but right now the West Indies would be hoping that the lights make a difference later on, because there isn’t a lot happening right now.
38th over – Thomas to continue
By Andrew McGarry
This could be a key section of play …
Ok! Thomas gets it to swing away outside off, Marnus follows it and everyone gets a bit interested.
He’s getting movement, all right – but that’s a no-ball!
That was too straight, Labuschagne clips him off his legs for two. That was too simple.
Better! That was in the blockhole from Thomas and Marnus duly dug it out.
Another big wide swinging ball well outside off. Can he tempt Marnus again?
Another dot ball, defended back up the pitch.
A nice shot pushed out on the offside to keep Labuschagne on strike.
37th over – Phillip continues
By Andrew McGarry
Anderson Phillip is in for his ninth over … and he pays for giving Labuschagne more width!
Marnus goes back and middles it behind square for four.
Another single there out through the offside.
Australia gathering pace here – this could be dangerous here for West Indies, given the issues with their bowling attack.
A straight drive back up the ground from Khawaja, no run. He’s on 62.
Usman is left eyeing the toe of his bat after that one. No run.
A quick check of these men’s batting averages in 2022. Khawaja is going at a tick over 92, while Labuschagne is in advance of 58.
Nice going, gentlemen.
36th over – Devon Thomas is on to bowl
By Andrew McGarry
Devon Thomas is like the West Indies’ Swiss Army knife – he bats at five, bowls a bit, can keep… how will he go here?
A dot ball to start – but now it’s a half-volley and Khawaja steers it perfectly to the boundary.
AND ANOTHER FOUR! That was a poor ball and Khawaja did not miss.
Tough start for Thomas here.
A dot ball … he gets out of the over for just eight, but he will want to improve.
