A wheat farmer has been given the shock of his life after he found a baby seal in his crop this morning.

Key points:

  • A baby seal was found in a wheat crop on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula
  • Farmers say it strayed almost 3km from the coast
  • The pup was returned to the ocean

Located on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula at Mitchellville, farmer Ty Kaden said the pup strayed almost three kilometres from the coast.

“Our neighbour called me up and said ‘quick, you better come over and have a look, there’s a baby seal in our driveway,'” said Mr Kaden.

“I thought he was just pulling my leg to start off with.

“There was a tiny little three-foot baby seal, on the edge of the wheat crop.

“I’ve never seen them up around this area.”

Farmers in the area are used to encountering pests, but Mr Kaden didn’t expect to find this “very cute” pup.

It was gathered up and taken back to the ocean.

“We put a towel over it and put it in a plastic box in the ute.

“Probably around three kilometres down the beach through scrub, we let it go on the beach.

“Lucky it was high tide, it shuffled off into the water.

“Hopefully, it’s found some fish. Hopefully, it survives.”
