Security guards will return to Whyalla Secondary College for the beginning of the next term.
The security guards were brought in after an alleged assault in May left a 16-year-old in hospital.
The guards were reportedly set to be removed from the school this Friday, at the end of term two, but Department of Education chief executive Martin Westwell told the ABC they would be back.
“We think things are settled down, but just to make sure we get a good run-in to the beginning of next term the security guards will still be there and we’ll stay connected with the school principal and the school community,” he said.
“We know that violence is completely unacceptable in schools and it’s important for students to learn that violence isn’t the way to solve problems.
Mr Westwell said the guards would stay for “certainly the beginning of term”, but added that the department did not want guards there in the long term.
“I don’t think [there will be more school violence once the guards leave] but if that is the case, and if the school felt that security guards were the best solution, we wouldn’t hesitate to bring them back in,” he said.
