A man has died following a fatal crash on Kangaroo Island that left his truck upside down in the sea.

Just after 8am, police and emergency crews were called to the corner of Clark and Christmas Street near the Penneshaw boat ramp, after a truck left the road.

The vehicle crashed over an embankment before landing on rocks. 

The driver and sole occupant, a 27-year-old man from Kangaroo Island, died at the scene.

Major Crash investigators attended the scene.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are continuing.

Aerial vision from the scene showed the vehicle floating upside down in the water, fully submerged. 

Debris — including wheels and parts of the truck’s undercarriage — was strewn across nearby rocks.

Emergency services tried to retrieve the truck from the water.(ABC News)

False Cape Wines, which is based on the Dudley Peninsula, paid tribute to the crash victim in a post on its Facebook page.

“We are saddened by the tragic accident this morning. Our hearts go out to family and friends. The cellar door will be closed today,” it said.

Police have asked anyone who saw the crash or the truck travelling in the area to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The man’s death is the 22nd life lost on South Australian roads, compared with 33 at the same time last year.
