Firefighters are still at the scene of a large commercial blaze at Edwardstown that started early this morning.

Triple-0 calls raised the alarm at about 2:00am for the fire at a warehouse off South Road between Angus Avenue and Ackland Street, near the Maid of Auckland Hotel.

Sixty firefighters were called to help, with a large damage bill expected after the premises was gutted.

The businesses damaged included an energy consultancy firm and a signage company.

The Metropolitan Fire Service put out warnings about plastic toxins released from the fire.

Police said local residents should remain indoors and close all doors and windows until the smoke has passed.

While traffic on South Road is not affected, police reminded motorists to travel below 25 kilometres per hour past emergency vehicles.

The fire’s cause has not yet been established.

Police fire cause investigators will attend the scene today.

A brush fence fire also started about the same time on South Terrace, in Adelaide’s CBD.

Police said the cause was suspicious.
