A man who was allegedly involved in a stabbing and shooting overnight has been arrested after a stand-off with police in Adelaide’s north this morning.
Key points:
- A 22-year-old man was allegedly stabbed at his home in Semaphore overnight
- A witness to the stabbing was then allegedly shot with what was believed to be a pellet gun
- Two men fled the scene, one was arrested quickly and the other was arrested after lengthy police negotiations
Streets around a Para Hills home had been cordoned off for a couple of hours as police negotiated with the suspect.
Investigations led police to the Para Hills home after a stabbing and shooting at Semaphore at about 3:00am today.
Police were called to a home on Woolnough Road and said when they arrived they found two men had allegedly assaulted and stabbed the occupant.
A 22-year-old man sustained facial injuries and a laceration to his head and hand.
He was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Police said a witness heard the commotion and attempted to intervene after seeing the victim lying injured on the driveway and two men running off.
One suspect shot what police believed to be a pellet gun, hitting the witness in the chest and causing minor bruising.
The two men left the scene in a vehicle.
Police said investigations led then them to the Para Hills home where the suspect vehicle was found.
One man was arrested quickly and police had lengthy negotiations with the second man until he was arrested at about 9:45am.
Police said it was not a random incident.
Kate Young, who lives at the Semaphore house, said she knew both the victim and the two alleged attackers.
“I heard something out the front — I wasn’t going to act on it, I just decided to suss what it was,” she said.
“My friend walked out the front door, I turned the light on, and then two people came from right there and jumped out and started jumping him over there, grabbed a knife out.
“I walked back inside, slammed the door shut to call the police and then I heard a gunshot. I waited until they left, and then ran back outside and he was just laying there.
“He’s in hospital [now], he’s going to be there for a while.”
Ms Young said she had heard that while she was inside the house contacting police, a neighbour came to help but was also shot at.
“I’m speechless, I’m genuinely speechless about what happened,” she said.
“I thought I was going to die.”
Elderly man punched during break in
Police are also searching for another man who assaulted an elderly resident during a separate break-in at Hackney last night.
Emergency services were called to an Oxford Street home late last night after the man demanded the elderly man’s wallet before punching him in the face and fleeing the scene with his wallet and a laptop.
Senior Constable Jen Cullinan said the 77-year-old victim was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
“Eastern District patrols flooded the area with the assistance of dog operations but were unable to locate the suspect,” Senior Constable Cullinan said.
“We’re currently looking for a man in his mid 40s with a large build, 188 centimetres tall and wearing dark clothing.”
