South Australia Police are investigating the death of a woman north of Adelaide on Friday.
Key points:
- A 63-year-old woman has been found dead in her Gawler South home
- Police are yet to determine the cause of her death
- A woman has been charged over an alleged assault at the home on Thursday
Police and paramedics were called to a home on Seventh Street at Gawler South at midday, where they found a 63-year-old woman dead inside.
A 54-year-old woman, also from Gawler South, has been arrested for an alleged assault that happened at the home on Thursday night.
She was initially refused police bail but was released from custody after a magistrate’s review to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on November 23.
Senior Constable Rebecca Stokes said Major Crime detectives and crime scene investigators returned to the house on Saturday morning.
Police initially described the death as “suspicious” but have since changed their wording to “unexplained,” saying a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the cause and circumstances of her death.
Neighbours told ABC News the deceased woman had lived at the house for more than 20 years.
They described her as friendly, but said there was often trouble at the property with police being called on a regular basis.
Neighbour Kinsey Jackson said the woman’s death had shocked the neighbourhood.
“On Friday morning when we got up there was just a lot of police cars, five or six police cars,” she said.
“It’s always been a quiet town, Gawler, a really quiet place, so it’s quite shocking to see that something like that would happen across the road.”
Ms Kinsey said her heart goes out to the woman’s family.
“It’s very, very sad. It’s very sad for all of them. Nobody wants that. Not in a local town like ours,” she said.
Mark Gordon, who also lives on the street, said it was usually a peaceful neighbourhood.
“It’s a little bit sad because it’s a nice peaceful street generally and got good neighbours on either side of the place,” he said.
Police are asking for anyone who saw or heard any activity on Seventh Street or has any dashcam or CCTV footage to contact Crime Stoppers.
