An elderly man was rushed to hospital fighting for life yesterday after he was punched and then hit his head on the ground in Adelaide’s CBD, police have said.

The 89-year-old was walking along Grote Street early yesterday afternoon when he was attacked, allegedly by a 33-year-old man.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene about 1:00pm.

The victim, from West Croydon, was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with a serious head injury.

“His condition is considered life-threatening,” police said.

They said the man was punched, causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head.

The man’s alleged attacker was arrested at the scene and “is likely to be charged with aggravated assault”, according to police.

This morning, police said they had not been notified of any change in the victim’s condition.
