Melbourne community groups using funds to boost vaccination rates among refugees
As the nation inches towards a 70 percent vaccination target, these harder to reach communities are crucial to unlocking greater freedoms for all.
Sar Pee, 23, has managed to convince 15 members of the Burmese community to get vaccinated together as a group, to support each other.
She told the ABC that many speak limited English, were hesitant, and had had fallen for misinformation shared by family overseas.
“Most of our family are still in refugee camps and they are sending messages saying don’t get vaccinated, there are lots of risks,” she said.
“The don’t know how to use the internet, they don’t know how to use Facebook, they don’t even watch the news.”
Newly arrived migrants often don’t have the tools they have to fact-check misinformation and because it is being shared in another language, health authorities cannot help.
Sar Pee, who works for an organisation called South East Community Links, was able to convince them the vaccine was safe and effective.
Some of the vaccinated group told the ABC they were relieved and happy someone had explained the situation to them in their own language.
