Major crime detectives have arrested a third man in connection with the alleged detention and torture of a man in Adelaide’s southern suburbs last month — and have now linked it to their investigation of the suspected murder of Robert Atkins.
Key points:
- Three arrests have been made over the alleged torture of a man at Seaford last month
- Police say the arrests came as a result of their investigation into the disappearance of Robert Atkins
- Mr Atkins was reported missing in January and police believe he was murdered at Port Pirie
The latest man arrested, a 43-year-old from Northfield, is accused of aggravated assault and unlawfully detaining a 33-year-old man at Seaford on July 15.
It is alleged the man is a co-offender of two men who were arrested by detectives on August 21 at Seaford and on August 26 at Aldinga.
Earlier this week a court heard the victim, who had a suspected intellectual disability, was tortured with a taser, with the ordeal filmed and uploaded to Facebook.
Prosecutors said the video shows the victim crying, visibly distressed and pleading not to be tasered.
All three men have been remanded in custody to face court in December.
Officers said the arrests in the unlawful detention matter occurred as a consequence of their investigation into the suspected murder of Christie Downs man Robert Atkins.
The 29-year-old was reported missing by his mother in January when she became concerned that she had not seen her son for two months.
Police believe Mr Atkins’s death was connected to his involvement in the southern suburbs drug scene.
They have previously said they suspect he was held against his will and assaulted for up to seven days at a house on Mander Road at Christie Downs in November.
Police believe Mr Atkins was later murdered at Port Pirie, but are yet to find his body.
