An Adelaide man who allegedly “rammed” a car into three cyclists in three separate incidents has been charged with endangering life.

Key points:

  • Earlier this month, three cyclists were allegedly “rammed” by a man in a Ford Fairmont
  • Days later police found the car, which they said had been reported stolen
  • A 25-year-old man has been charged in relation to the incident and has been bailed to appear in court in September

On August 5, between 6:30am and 7:00am, three cyclists were struck or forced off the road by a white Ford Fairmont sedan while they were riding in the bike lane along Lady Gowrie Drive at North Haven in Adelaide’s north-west.

Police said a member of the public saw the first incident, in which a cyclist was rammed and thrown off his bicycle onto the verge, causing bruising and grazes.

In the second incident a cyclist was forced off the road into the dirt verge.

That cyclist then witnessed a third rider being hit by the same car, causing him to be thrown off his bike — significantly damaging his bike.

Sam Beveridge was the second cyclist hit during the alleged attacks.

Earlier this month, he told ABC Radio Adelaide that about 30 seconds after he rode past the car, it was “ramming” him from behind.

“He’s well and truly inside the bike lane, he’s ramming me with his car,” he said.

“I’ve managed to move into the dirt and protect myself and stop myself getting killed by him.”

Mr Beveridge said he was lucky that another car was driving past at that moment, so the car in the bike lane drove away from him.

“Unfortunately for a rider that was about 200 metres in front of me, he’s sped up into him — it’s about 60kph limit zone,” he said.

“He’s sped above that speed limit and accelerated into this rider and hit him at full speed — seven o’clock in the morning, it’s clear as day — and he’s left him for dead on the side of the road.”

Mr Beveridge had a camera attached to his bike that filmed the incident, which he later turned over to police.

Police find car days after alleged attacks

Police found the Ford Fairmont on August 10, after an appeal to the public, and discovered the car had been reported stolen.

It was towed away for forensic testing.

On August 26, detectives interviewed and then arrested a 25-year-old Hilton man.

He has been charged with three counts of acts to endanger life, leaving the scene of an accident, property damage, making false report to police and failing to truly answer questions to identify driver.

He was bailed and is due to appear in court on September 29.
