An elderly driver has lost his licence for six months after police allegedly detected his high-performance car travelling at more than 80 kilometres per hour above the speed limit.
Key points:
- The man was allegedly clocked at 182 kilometres per hour
- He was fined $1,814 and has lost his licence for six months
- Police said his driving was “of significant concern”, especially in light of recent fatal crashes
Highway patrols spotted the Subaru WRX sedan at Alma, near Tarlee and Stockport in South Australia’s lower Mid North region, about 2:45pm on Wednesday.
Police said the car was travelling at 182kph along a section of road with a speed limit of 100kph.
The 80-year-old driver, an Adelaide Plains man, was pulled over and handed a $1,814 fine.
He has also lost his licence for six months.
“Highway patrols will continue to have a presence along main arterial roads and highways between rural townships with speed detection, vehicle road-worthiness and drink and drug driving receiving particular attention.”
Police have repeatedly pleaded with drivers to slow down and take care on the state’s roads, following a spate of fatal crashes.
Last week, a 68-year-old Mannum man was killed when his ute rolled on Mallee Road at Walker Flat.
His death was the 64th on SA’s roads in 2021, compared to 57 at the same time last year.
Weeks earlier, a grandmother and father were killed when the car they were in hit a tree, during a road trip to buy a birthday present.
“I implore people to be cautious, drive safely and consider the consequences and implications of your actions when you’re using our roads because there are significant and quite often lifelong consequences,” Superintendent Bob Gray said following the incident.
