Two young men have been killed in a crash at Nuriootpa in South Australia’s Barossa Valley overnight, with a third person who was in the back of the ute rushed to hospital.
Key points:
- A 23-year-old driver and 20-year-old passenger both died at the scene
- A third person in the rear of the vehicle has serious injuries
- Major Crash investigators are examining the scene
The 23-year-old driver and 20-year-old passenger were travelling in the vehicle when it hit a tree on Angaston Road.
Police and paramedics were called about 2:30am but both men, who were from the Barossa region, died at the scene.
Police said a third person who was in the “rear of the utility” had been airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious injuries.
The vehicle had been travelling in an easterly direction when it hit the tree on the southern side of the road.
Investigators from SA Police Major Crash are currently at the scene.
Angaston Road has been closed between Light Pass Road and Research Road, with diversions in place.
The men’s deaths take the number of lives lost on SA roads this year to 28, compared to 25 at the same this time last year.
The incident follows several other horrific crashes in recent weeks, including one which claimed the lives of two people on the Stuart Highway earlier this month.
