Officers from Bundaberg Highway Patrol have issued a stern warning to beach drivers to expect police anywhere, anytime during the remainder of the school holidays, after detecting two unlicensed drivers at Kinkuna two days in a row.

Police have been conducting high visibility patrols as part of Operation Roscoesoma, which was launched in 2024 to target speeding, mobile phone use, seatbelts, fatigue and drink and drug driving at Coonar and Kinkuna beaches. 

At approximately 4.35pm on 25 September, police intercepted a black Toyota Hilux on Palm Beach Road where it is alleged the driver returned a positive roadside drug test.

A 36-year-old Redcliffe man was issued a Notice to Appear (NTA) for driving with a relevant drug in saliva and driving whilst disqualified.

He is due to appear in Bundaberg Magistrates Court on 2 November.

Around 3.40pm on 26 September, police intercepted a white Holden Colorado on the sand near Beach Road where it is alleged the driver returned a positive roadside breath test.

A 22-year-old Pacific Haven man was issued an NTA for driving whilst restricted and driving under the influence of liquor.

He is due to appear in Bundaberg Magistrates Court on 16 November.

Officer in Charge of Bundaberg Highway Patrol Sergeant Gordan Hard said it was disappointing to have to issue two NTAs to unlicensed drivers within 24 hours.

“All road rules apply on the beach, it is akin to driving on the Bruce Highway,” he said.

“There is zero tolerance for dangerous behaviour on our beaches and if you are caught flaunting the road rules, you can expect to face the consequences.”
