A targeted and concentrated focus on road safety is delivering results for the public – and holding dangerous driving behaviours to account.
In South Brisbane District, 3,680 random breath tests were conducted under Operation Moffett on 11 September and Operation Raze on 17 September.
Officers detected 23 drink drivers, issued 97 traffic infringement notices, made 53 Arrests/Notice to Appear, and laid 68 charges.
Brisbane police are also on alert to ensure vehicle loads are secure. Precarious cargo has the potential be catastrophic for the carrier, passengers and other road users.
Indooroopilly Highway Patrol officers conducting proactive patrols spotted a vehicle travelling along Youngs Crossing Road in Joyner with its rear door partially open, a fridge sticking out of the back, and a man lying next to the appliance.
The 46-year-old local man was issued with two infringement notices, one for travel in part of motor vehicle not designed for passengers or goods ($322 fine), and the other for the offence of failing to wear a seatbelt ($1,295 fine and loss of four demerit points).
The driver of the vehicle, a 40-year-old Joyner woman, was issued with an infringement notice for proceeding through a red traffic arrow ($690 fine and loss of three demerit points).
She was also educated on the importance of and how to safely secure your loads.
On Moreton Island, police are keeping the community safe and conducting high visibility patrols.
Inspector Mat Kelly said when drivers move off the ferry, officers are performing breath tests and ensuring vehicle access permits are valid.
“Police acknowledge that the island is a holiday haven for everyone to enjoy, but it is important for visitors to remember of the dangers associated with drink-driving and that road rules also apply on the beach.
“From the highways to the suburbs to the beaches, these results and activities highlight the value of sustained, high visibility policing in deterring dangerous driving behaviour and protecting all road users,” says Inspector Mat Kelly.
“Police will continue high-visibility and covert patrols, and targeted activity focused on dangerous driving behaviours under Operation Spring Break.”
