Detectives from the Townsville Child Abuse and Sexual Crime Group have charged a 70-year-old Kirwan man following an investigation into alleged historical child sex offences.

It is alleged that between 2021 and 2022, the man utilised his position as a coach associated with a boxing gym to offend against a teenage child.

Following investigations, officers today executed a crime scene warrant at a gym in Kirwan, where they seized several relevant items.

The 70-year-old Kirwan man was also arrested today and has been charged with four counts of sexual assault and three counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16.

He is expected to appear in Townsville Magistrates Court on 15 September.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Miles of the Townsville Child Abuse and Sexual Crime Unit said the investigation demonstrates the commitment of police to investigate allegations involving the abuse of trust thoroughly.

“We acknowledge the courage required for victims to come forward and report these matters, particularly where the offending is alleged to have occurred over an extended period of time.”
