A targeted high visibility traffic operation was conducted at Cardwell on Saturday, 8 August to crack down on drink drivers, drug drivers and defective vehicles.
The road safety operation was conducted as part of the statewide road safety initiative, Operation Interpose which focuses on life endangering offences including speed, impaired driving, fatigue, mobile phone use, not wearing seatbelts, vehicle compliance and roadworthiness as well as heavy vehicle offences.
On Saturday, officers conducted 780 roadside breath tests (RBTs), three roadside drug tests (RDTs) and issued nine traffic infringement notices (TINs).
The nine TINs issued some of which included two for unsecured loads, two for defective vehicles, one for driving an unregistered vehicle and one for driving with an expired licence.
As part of the joint Far Northern and Northern police operation over the two days, on Saturday, 25 July and Saturday, 8 August police conducted a total of 1833 RBTs, nine RDTs and issued 21 TINs.
It will be alleged, about 1.30pm officers were conducting patrols along the Bruce Highway at Helens Hill when they detected a white Mitsubishi ASX travelling 115km/h in a 100km/h zone.
The driver, a 20-year-old Upper Daradgee woman was issued a TIN for speeding and was fined $518 and three demerit points.
About 7.35am on 8 August, police were conducting patrols along the Bruce Highway at Bilyana when they intercepted a prime mover truck and it is alleged the trucks cargo was not secure.
The driver, a 26-year-old Beaconsfield man, was issued a TIN for driving a vehicle when load not appropriately restrained and he was fined $345.
Halifax Police Station Officer in Charge Acting Sergeant Iain Russell said police remained firmly focused on prevention and the role every driver plays in keeping our roads safe.
“Everyone is responsible for their own driving behaviour on the roads. We want them to remember that their own actions have a direct impact on other road users.” OIC Acting Sergeant Russell said.
“These operations are designed to be unpredictable to re-enforce the messaging that you can be detected – anytime, anywhere.
“Police will continue to run high-visibility and targeted operations as part of Operation Interpose across the Townsville District to keep the community safe and hold offenders to account.”
