Emergency Services cadets from across Queensland descended upon the Redcliffe showgrounds on Saturday 1 August, for the PCYC Cadet Games.
Following the successful games in Townsville in June, 31 cadet teams from Queensland emergency services, including Queensland Police Service (QPS), and Queensland Fire Department (QFD).
They were accompanied by volunteers from QPS, State Emergency Service (SES) and Marine Rescue Queensland (MRQ) members, providing young participants with friendly competitions and challenges, designed to test their skills.
Requiring strong communication, team-work and problem solving, the annual competition is an opportunity for the cadets to develop their skills.
The games are a part of the PCYC Emergency Service Cadet Programs supported through a Service Level Agreement, which is administered by QPS Emergency Management and Coordination Group on behalf of the Queensland Government.
Acting Assistant Commissioner for Emergency Response and Coordination Command, David French said the games are a celebration of the next generation of emergency service members.
“These games are always such a fantastic opportunity to engage with youth from across the State, and provide them with outlets for their energy and talents,” Acting Assistant Commissioner French said.
“It’s an opportunity for the cadets to test and showcase their physical abilities, strategic thinking and collaborative spirit.”
SES Brisbane Region Regional Director, Rick Murdoch said the games also provided an opportunity for the cadets to gain insights into various career paths.
“We would love to see these young people continue to progress through the various emergency services participating,” Regional Director Murdoch said.
The 31 teams involved in the games were guided by volunteer Adult Leaders—many of whom are also emergency services personnel.
QPS officers, SES and MRQ volunteers, among members from other emergency services, acted as judges, activity facilitators, and coaches.
“We love giving cadets the opportunity to interact with other members from emergency services,” said Acting Assistant Commissioner French.
