An 18-year-old teenage boy has been fined nearly $2000, had his licence suspended and vehicle immobilised after allegedly being detected travelling 79km/h over the speed limit at Blue Mountain Heights on 3 August.
Officers from Toowoomba Highway Patrol were conducting patrols along the New England Highway at around 8.40pm when they intercepted an Audi A5 allegedly travelling at 169km/h in a 90km/h zone.
The P-Plater was issued with a traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40km/h and was fined $1,986, incurred eight demerit points and had his licence suspended for six months.
He also had his vehicle immobilised for 90 days.
Toowoomba Highway Patrol Officer in Charge Acting Senior Sergeant Jo Goodwin said the speed was reckless and completely unacceptable.
“Travelling at 169km/h on a public road is an incredibly dangerous decision that puts not only the driver at risk, but every person on that road,” Acting Senior Sergeant Goodwin said.
“For a P-Plater, who has limited driving experience, this sort of behaviour is especially concerning. Speed like this leaves no margin for error and the consequences can be catastrophic.”
“Highway Patrol Officers are out there every day targeting dangerous driving behaviours. If you choose to ignore the road rules, expect to be detected and face the consequences.”
So far this year there have been 188 lives lost on Queensland Roads, including 17 lives lost in the Darling Downs District.
