Kirwan’s state-of-the-art police facility has officially opened today at the former home of the North Queensland Cowboys NRL team, marking a significant boost to the Townsville District’s growing policing capabilities.
Designed to provide a central location to better coordinate key policing capabilities, the new facility on Golf Links Drive will also provide officers a valuable opportunity to strengthen relationships with residents, visitors and local businesses around Kirwan.
The facility will not only serve as the new official Kirwan Police Station, but it will also accommodate several specialist police units including Townsville Tactical Crime Squad, Kirwan Criminal Investigation Branch, and Policelink, among others.
Deputy Commissioner Regional Operations John Tims said Townsville residents deserve policing resources that are adept to meeting the evolving needs of the community, ensuring public safety and reinforcing a strong policing presence.
“The brand-new facility will functionally align proactive and reactive units to coordinate and place QPS resources where they are most needed and can be most effective,” Deputy Commissioner Tims said.
Assistant Commissioner Virginia Nelson said the opening of the Kirwan Police facility marks a historical moment for the Townsville Police District.
“We want the community to know we are here to support them,” Assistant Commissioner Nelson said.
The opening of the facility marks the completion of Stage 1 of the complex.
Stage 2 will see the addition of the Police Academy (Northern Campus), the Dog Squad and other specialised units, and is set to open in the 2029/2030 financial year.
Officer in Charge of Kirwan Station, Senior Sergeant Matt Lyons, said he was proud to continue supporting his officers, the broader Queensland Police Service, and the community they serve.
“Our staff have embraced the improved workspace and the benefits that come from being co-located with other policing units,” Senior Sergeant Lyons said.
“This modern facility strengthens collaboration, enhances our operational capability, and ultimately allows us to deliver a more effective service to the community.”
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to keeping our community safe — protecting the vulnerable, preventing crime, and holding offenders to account.”
