Police have charged a man following investigations into a traffic crash involving a stolen vehicle at Mermaid Beach yesterday morning, 15 February.

It will be alleged that around 5.15pm on Saturday 14 February, a 2008 silver Mazda 2 was parked on Ipswich Road at Woolloongabba when it was stolen by a man.

It will be further alleged that around 9.15am the next morning, 15 February, the Mazda collided with two female pedestrians at the intersection of the Gold Coast Highway and Markeri Street at Mermaid Beach, before the male-driver fled in the vehicle.

A 57-year-old Kenmore Hills woman sustained back and arm injuries, while a 23-year-old woman sustained pelvic injuries.

Both were transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

The stolen Mazda and driver were located a short time later at a Broadbeach Waters shopping centre carpark and the man was arrested.

Police have subsequently charged the 32-year-old North Ward man with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a vehicle and adversely affected by an intoxicating substance and fail to comply with reporting. Additionally, police have suspended the man’s driver’s licence.
