Far North police are seeing positive declines in offending, as a surge response to target high-priority and property offenders continues.

Since 9 August, police have charged 656 people with 2225 offences, conducted 332 bail checks and seized seven weapons.

On 11 September, a 16-year-old boy was arrested in Gordonvale and charged with 15 offences, including two counts of stealing, four counts of enter dwelling and commit, five counts of enter with intent, two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and one count each of attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle and enter premises.

He was remanded in custody to appear in the Cairns Children’s Court on 19 September.

On 12 September, a 25-year-old Yarrabah man was arrested on Spence Street after he allegedly stole a scooter from a teenager at a nearby shopping centre.

He was charged with one count each of possess dangerous drugs, unlawful possession of suspected stolen property, unregulated high-risk activities, wilful damage, obstruct police, stealing, possess implements was being or was to be used in relation to a particular offence and fail to properly dispose of a needle and syringe.

He’s scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on September 29.

Detective Inspector Jason Chetham said while these results are promising, police remain unrelenting in their work to prevent and disrupt crime in the region.

“While we are pleased with these initial results, we know there is more work to be done,” Detective Inspector Chetham said.

“We have apprehended several of our serious repeat offenders causing harm in our community and will hold them accountable for their actions.

“Crime rates frequently fluctuate, however we are hoping to keep these numbers low, and ensure our community feels safe.”

He was charged with seven counts each of stealing and using or permitting use of vehicle for which a number plate attached given granted for another vehicle, two counts of unlawful possession of suspected stolen property, and one count each of obstruct police, breach of bail, receive tainted property, evade police and fail to appear. He was remanded in custody to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on 23 September.

He was charged with twelve counts of breach of bail, and one count each of unlawful dealing with explosives, enter premises and commit indictable offence, possessing dangerous drugs, and driving without a driver licence. He is due to reappear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on 10 October.
