A 73-year-old motorcyclist has died after a crash in South Australia’s Flinders Ranges, with early reports suggesting the man collided with a kangaroo and a tree.

SA Police were called to Flinders Ranges Way, 40 kilometres north of Hawker, at about 9:30am.

The man, from Alice Springs, died at the scene.

His was the 16th life lost on South Australian roads so far this year.

Major Crash officers are on their way to the scene and road closures are in place.

Flinders Ranges Way will be closed north of Rawnsley Park Station for vehicles travelling north.

Those wanting to travel from Hawker to Wilpena Pound or north of Rawnsley Park will need to divert to the Outback Highway and Parachilna Gorge Road.

Those travelling south on Flinders Ranges Way, north of Rawnsley Park, will also need to detour through to the Outback Highway and Parachilna Gorge Road.
