Police say a 53-year-old man and a 94-year-old man have died after a car accident in South Australia’s Riverland today.

Emergency services attended the scene of the fatal crash at Old Calperum near Renmark on Monday afternoon after reports of a crash between a car and a truck on the Sturt Highway at 1.40pm. 

The truck driver was taken to Berri Hospital with minor injuries.

The highway remains closed while major crash investigators attend the scene.

Heavy vehicles from Adelaide are being diverted to Loxton via Kingston Road in Moorook.

Those coming from Yamba are being asked to turn off at Stanitzki Road. 

The roads are expected to remain closed for the remainder of the evening. 

The deaths are the 30th and 31st lives lost on SA roads this year, compared to 15 at the same time last year.
