An Elizabeth Downs man caught driving a homemade convertible while running a red light has pleaded guilty to traffic offences.

Key points:

  • The car was stopped by police at Glenelg North in May
  • Police realised the car’s roof had been cut off to make it look like a convertible
  • The driver will next appear in court in August

Appearing in the Adelaide Magistrates Court today, Joshua Dean Mathews, 25, pleaded guilty to a number of charges, including driving unlicensed, failing to stop at a red light, breaching vehicle standards and breach of bail.

Police have previously said they were patrolling Jetty Road in Glenelg in May this year when the occupants of a white car yelled out at them before the car ran a red light.

The car was pulled over on Douglas Grove in Glenelg North.

Police said checks revealed Mathews’ driver’s licence had been expired for six years and that he was on bail with a condition that he would not drive.

When police inspected the car at the time of the incident, they realised it was a standard Hyundai Excel, but the roof had been cut off to make it look like a convertible.

It was defected and towed away.

Mathews will next appear in court in August.
